The initiative, “The Fruit of Books” began with the principle of giving more access for reading in places removed from cultural centers. This project was funded through a grant of $42,000.0. given by the division of the Chilean National Council of Culture and the Arts. Worked in collaboration with Fernanda Bezmalinovich (Bachelor in Literature). Did research on education and library needs of the community. Conducted meetings with the Board of the Central Market, designed and implemented a survey to establish reading preferences and needs in the market. Worked on strategical partnerships within the community (cultural centers and the municipality). Achieved book donations and library architectural structure. Designed and implemented the book collection and computer system. Presently, the Library is ongoing under the administration of the Board of the Market, the revenue by concept of inscription and the work of a group of volunteers and interns. The Library the Fruit of Books opened in October 2005 with a collection of 1000 books and a progressive growth in the reading habits of the users. Nowadays, the library relies on more than 600 inscribed active users and more than 1600 books. In 2006 there were 5111 books borrowed and average of 300 lendings monthly.
